Links and Attachments in SEP

SEP allows you to add, edit and/or access links and file attachments for various types of records that are shared across SEP and the ReliaSoft desktop applications. (See Attachments in the help for any desktop application to learn more.)

Note: Depending on the database settings, certain file types may be restricted from use as attachments. In such cases, the Add and/or Edit buttons will not be visible in SEP. In addition, you will not be able to edit the name or description of any file that was attached to a record before it was restricted. (See Database Settings in the desktop help to learn more.)

Link / Attachment Properties

Actions and Messages

For actions and messages that you create in SEP, you can add links and attachments. The maximum file size for uploads is 20 MB.

You can also download files and perform the following editing tasks, regardless of whether the record was created in SEP or in a desktop application:

  • Delete links and attachments.
  • Edit the names and descriptions of links and attachments.
  • Edit the URLs for links.

However, you cannot change the Attachment Type or the attachment itself.

Note: Due to browser security concerns, links to files on a local computer or network that are created in the desktop applications cannot be created, opened or saved in SEP. You can, however, edit the file names and descriptions of these links in SEP.

Project Summaries

The same editing capabilities for actions and messages also apply to project summaries, which originate from the desktop applications.

FMEA Records

You can access links and download files that have been attached to FMEA records — functions, failures, effects, causes and controls — via the desktop applications; however, you cannot add, edit or delete them in SEP. (See Viewing FMEAs in SEP.)

Creating Links and Attachments

To create a new link to an Internet site or to attach a file to an action, message or project summary, click the Add button in the Links/Attachments section of the page. This opens the Attachment Properties pop-up window. You’ll need to enter a name and, optionally, a description.

For messages, you are limited to a single attachment per message; this may be an embedded image.

  • To attach a file, choose Embedded File in the Attachment Type drop-down list and use the Browse button to find and select a file to upload.
  • To create a link, choose URL in the Attachment Type drop-down list and type the URL (up to 2,000 characters) in the address field.
